Part 1: Reading Hand Gesture
If you are like most people, there have been times when you have desperately wanted to "get inside someone's head," or understand what is driving someone. It can be difficult to discern what people are thinking or feeling from their faces or general posture, because not only are we are trained to manage these expressions, we have neurobiology (mirror neurons) that can cause us to have instinctual facial reactions that prioritize our desire to fit in to the group (survival) over our true feelings.
Our hands, however, are not shown to be as linked to the mirror neurons, and often "rat us out" when it comes to our authentic motivations and feelings. Learning how to read the gesture of the hands can be immeasurably useful in gaining insight into others and human nature. Here is a quick rubric on how to read hand gesture.

Meanings of the Mounts & Fingers
To read gesture, we need to understand the meanings of the fingers, which are inspired by the mount at the base of the fingers.
The Index Finger
The pointer finger is influenced by Jupiter and represents direction, power, leadership, sovereignty, expansion, and fortune. Very similar to the ways we use that finger! When we extend that finger and point, we are active in the powers of Jupiter: directing, leading, or expanding. When that finger is relaxed or curled, we are more likely to be collaborating, cooperating, and partnering with others.
The Middle Finger
The middle finger is influenced by Saturn and represents rules, boundaries, ethics, and karma. Think about how we use it - whenever those things are violated, and karma is not present, we lift that finger to let people know they have violated rules, boundaries and ethics! When we unconsciously extend the middle finger we are holding to our boundaries and our karmic destiny, when we relax our middle finger we are more open minded and flexible to explore beyond our own rules.
The Ring Finger
The ring finger is influenced by the Sun (the "Apollo finger" in palmistry) and represents our ego, self esteem, and our identity: how we show up with others. Think about how we use it - we adorn ourselves here; on the left hand with an identity that might say, "engaged" or "married." We adorn our ring finger on the right hand with identities such as class rings, rings of accomplishment or status. For instance, someone wearing a 4 carat cocktail ring on that right hand is definitely showing off some status, no? When someone extends the ring finger, they are expressing confidence, strong self esteem, and a desire to show up well. When the ring finger is relaxed or curled, they are more likely to share the stage with others and embrace humility.

The Pinky Finger
The pinky finger is influenced by Mercury and represents our self expression and communication. This one is not commonly known, but when someone extends that pinky finger from their teacup, they are likely someone who is also rather chatty and expressive. If the person is more socialized toward masculine tendencies, they will tend to have that pinky finger extended under their drink can or bottle. Look for this next time, you will be amazed. When the pinky is extended, the person is active in their self expression and communication. When it is relaxed or curled, they are more likely to be listening and open to other's expression.
The Thumb
The thumb is influenced by two areas of the palm: the mount of Venus, and the plain of Mars, and represents taking action and doing things, especially in the real world. If you ponder how we use the thumb, you realize that most of our actions: from taking a drink from a water bottle, to typing on a keyboard, make liberal use of our opposable thumb. The two archetypes of Venus and Mars are important ingredients when we think about what it takes to take action. Venus represents desire, and Mars represents will, both of which must be present for any of us to actually do a thing.
How to Read Hand Gesture
Once you have a familiarity with the meanings of the mounts/fingers, it is pretty easy to read hand gesture. The position of the finger represents the unconscious state of mind of a person. Hand gesture is fleeting, based on a person's state at any given time, so this is useful to get a sense of someone in the moment and doesn't necessarily indicate their permanent personality, unless you see them make repeated gestures as a pattern over time.
Extended and Flexed Fingers
If a finger is extended, it represents active, assertive, or "awake" energy in that area of a person's life. For instance, if a person is extending their index finger (Jupiter) you might infer that this person is active in their leadership, that they are feeling an assertive sense of sovereignty, or that they are active in their expansion.
If a finger is flexed or curled, it represents passive, receptive, or "asleep" energy in that area of a person's life. For instance, if a person is flexing their index finger (Jupiter) you might infer that the person is more collaborative in their leadership, that they are receptive to others or cooperative, or that they may be pulling back from expanding.
Note that neither extended or flexed fingers are better or worse than each other, each can have their great and not-so-great qualities.
